L-Foes

Whenever I draw the Legion of Super-Heroes I try to be as offbeat as possible. Because why not? They have a huge range of power sets and backgrounds, so it's fun to do something creative, instead of just doing a standard group shot drawing. 

So this time I took an old panel from the "Incredible Hulk" comic book, depicting his enemies the U-Foes (picture an evil Fantastic Four), and replaced those characters with Legionnaires who have similar (or as close as possible) powers in the same poses.

Thus: villains X-Ray, Vapor, Ironclad and Vector are replaced respectively by Legion members Sun Boy, Vapor Lass (a renamed Gas Girl in my Legion), Blok and Kid Quantum II. I posted the original comic pnael at the end of this post (Sal Buscema is a longtime favorite artist).

New Recruits

Yet another Legion of Super Heroes drawing (haha). I decided to show a scene where Polar Boy welcomes recruits Lamprey (a long time Academy student), and Vapor Lass (a renamed Gas Girl from the Heroes of Lallor). In my universe they make it to the big team.

More Block Men

Well, I've lost interest in this drawing pretty rapidly. Half-hearted progress every few days, and this is as far as I've gotten since the previous post.

The Block Men are colored, as well as Lamprey. Also, Wildfire and Colossal Boy's leg are done, and I added Phantom Girl in the lower left (her arm is phasing through a Block Man to slow down his interdimensional tech). Lastly, you can see the pencil outlines of other undefined Legion members, one on the ground in temporary defeat, and three more flight-rininging their way to intercept the second trio of Block Men. It was a fun idea, but on to something else...

Legion vs The Block Men

My latest drawing of the Legion of Super-Heroes, this time versus a self-created team of bad guys, the terraforming Block Men (I had abetter name but I forgot it as I slept).

The Block Men are ancient synthezoids, dropped in trios on planets to be terraformed. They are nearly indestructible, have the strength of a Daxamite/Kryptonian, and have eye-like receptors on 3 sides of their heads, making them hard to surprise. A trio was dropped accidentally on an inhabited world, and are engaging the Legion. Startlingly, a second trio is being dropped planetside as the battle rages!

Left to right: so far, the Block Men are fighting with Lamprey, Wildfire and Colossal Boy, while (unnamed) is unconscious on the ground. The second trio of Block Men is coming in from the upper left. More to come as I make progress...

The Legion in Japan

Finally done! I finished everything I wanted to do, with final shading, coloring tweaks and other miscellaneous adjustments. It was a lot of fun, and I tried to do a little bit every day.

Character notes about "my" Legion of Super-Heroes: Lamprey (green, upper right) graduated from the Academy right onto the main team. Gas Girl (lower left, renamed Vapor Lass) migrated from Lallor, and is now of Japanese descent (hence the visit to Mt. Fuji and other places during cherry blossom season). And there is a new Ferro Lad (to the right of Vapor Lass), who holds true to his creator's original design (nixed by racist editors).

For those who don't know the team, from upper left: Invisible Kid II, Sun Boy, Polar Boy, Wildfire, Lamprey. Vapor Lass, Ferro Lad, Lighning Lass, Shrinking Violet and Blok.

Almost Done...

I drew in Mt. Fuji so the background wouldn't look so bare, and did some more coloring. Only a few more tweaks to go: the sky, misc. inking, and a few more spot colors.

Legion Crowd - Home Stretch

I got a lot more coloring done over the last couple of days, especially Blok (lower right, big stone guy). All that's really left is to figure out the background: either more buildings, a setting sun, or perhaps Mount Fuji (haha).

The drawing to date, with a lot of color added, and a couple of futuristic buildings to set the scene. Detailed inking is next! And perhaps an alien or two (or more members) in the mid-ground.

Legion Crowd

I'd gone a bit of time without drawing, so I decided to do a big group shot of the Legion of Super-Heroes, something I could add to on a day-to-day basis. Here is my progress from a 7-day run last week, Sunday through Saturday:

Gas Girl and Ferro Lad are drawn with outlines inked.
Sketched in are Polar Boy, Lamprey, Shrinking Violet and Blok.

More ink outlines, with Lightning Lass added to the left of Blok.

Everyone is outlined in ink so far, including the additions of
Invisible Kid II and Sun Boy in the upper left. More to come...

Lesser-Known Heroes

 I spent the last 2 days scribbling up these Substitute Heroes and other Legion characters.

From left to right:

• Antennae Boy (receives radio/other signals from all across the time stream), a latter-day member of the Legion of Substitute Heroes.
• Infectious Lass (can make people sick), same.
• Gas Girl (can transform her body into any kind of gas or vapor), of the Heroes of Lallor.
• Chlorophyll Kid (rapid plant growth), a founding member of the Subs.
• Ron-Karr (can flatten his body to wafer-thin), a Legion reject who joined the Legion of Super-Villains.

In my 'preferred' version of the Legion: Chlorophyll Kid and Polar Boy (not pictured) join the main team after a little training at the Legion Academy. Also, Gas Girl (who renames herself Vapor Lass) joins the Legion after leaving Lallor to get away from an unrequited crush on Duplicate Boy (while Shrinking Violet, also not pictured, stays behind for awhile). Ron-Karr reforms and joins the Subs after acquiring a camoflage suit, and becomes a valuable member of the Espionage Squad.

Sometimes this is my preferred method of drawing. I Scribble away randomly, and then refine it into something interesting (to me).

Omega Rematch

The Legion vs. Omega, a one-and-done villain from the early 80's, and a very cool story. It took the whole team, and as you can see from the way he handles Ultra Boy and Superboy, he is one tough customer.

 

Legion HQ

End of Year Scribble

Last night I drew this grouping of Legion of Super-Heroes members with a ball point pen, and over the course of today I colored it. I plan on drawing a l ot more in the new year, since I basically did nothing for the last 2 months!

As we have been getting snow lately, I drew Polar Boy in my current journal.

Legion Lounge I

I decided to draw a big group scene of the Legion. I've been slowly working on it while playing online games (DigDig and Elvenar).

As you can see, from top left, across and then down, I've colored: 

Chameleon Boy, Sun Boy, Chameleon Girl,

Braniac 5 and Supergirl.
